STEP 1: Choose & Brainstorm Your Good Domain Name

==> Click here to head over to Bluehost

First, it’s time to pick a domain name for your blog, select the blogging platform and hosting you’ll be using and in order to get your blog online live and readable.

Choose-Brainstorm-Your-Good- Domain-Name

It is the first step you take when you start a blog. A domain name is pretty much like your address on the web. For example, my domain name is

You get a domain name FREE if you sign up with Bluehost for a 12-month plan. I have signed up for 36 months, as it works out to be cheaper than paying every month.

I have hosted my blog with Bluehost, and I never had any issues with it. It offers the lowest price for hosting, and I am very pleased with their support.

Make sure the blog name is available.
Nothing’s worse than falling in love with a blog name only to learn that it’s taken in every form possible. You can use the tool below (or visit Bluehost’s website) to safely check names you’re considering.

When I was first starting my blog, I started checking blog names with a site that, I later learned, stole domain ideas from users. I’ve personally confirmed that Bluehost (below) doesn’t do that.

This is a fun and important step because your blog name is your brand. It’s how you’ll be remembered. But, don’t overthink it.

If you’re just starting a new blog, you should use BlueHost. They are the biggest and most well-known hosting company and I worked out a deal with them where you can get started for just $2.95 a month (plus you will get a free domain).

When you choose a domain name you’ll want to follow three simple rules:
1. Keep it simple. Refrain from words that are hard to spell or remember.
2. Use a – .com is what most people remember when typing in a web address.
3. Beware of words with multiple spellings: example: to, two, or too.
4. Make it easy to type: Try to get a domain name that is easy to type (if you can). Easy to type domain names are good for branding.

Once you’ve decided on a domain name type it into the search box and click next to see if it is available.

If your a domain name is available, you’ll see the “Create your account” page. Congrats! Continue to Step 2.

You may need to brainstorm a few ideas to get the keywords and .com that you want, but don’t worry you’ll find one that works.

Personally, I use BlueHost (for my blog domain and hosting), and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about it. It’s probably one of the cheapest (less than $3 per month) hosting providers out there.

z as many as you like and Bluehost will never steal your ideas.

STEP 2: Set up Your Hosting Account & Get started

Web hosting is a service that allows your blog to be accessed through the internet. Without web hosting, your blog can’t be seen online.

A web host is a company that stores all of the files for your blog and delivers them to the user when they type in your domain name.

You must have a web host in order to have a blog. There are hundreds of different web hosts you can choose from, but my recommendation for your blog is BlueHost.

I have been very happy with BlueHost for many years now, and recommend them for all new bloggers because:

  • They offer free, simple installation of all the popular blogging tools, including WordPress (the one I recommend and show you how to use in this guide).
  • They have been recommended by WordPress since 2005 and currently host over 2 million websites.
  • They offer industry-leading 24/7 customer service via phone, email, or webchat.
  • They offer a money-back guarantee if you are unsatisfied for any reason

Because BlueHost is a top-quality web host they cost a bit more ($5.99 per month) than low-quality hosts.

There is a way to get a discount though. If you use one of the links on this site you can get BlueHost’s high-quality service for just $2.75 per month (for 36 months), including a free domain name.

Then you will come to the web page below, where you have three options for hosting namely Basic, Plus and Prime. I am with the Basic plan and that is more than enough for me. You can always update the plan later if you need it.

Another the reason why I recommend the 12-month plan is, you save a lot of money when compared to paying month by month.

Choose your Package
After you have given your details, you come to this screen where you have to choose your package. I started off with a 36-month plan at $2.95 per month. If you don’t want to go for a long-term plan, then you can go with a 12-month plan.

It saves a lot of money.

As a beginner blogger, you don’t need to worry about the extras. If you need them, you can always update them later.

The “Basic” package is more than enough for most new websites, and you can uncheck the other paid options for now if you don’t want them.

It covers many things along with a FREE domain when you sign up for a 12-month plan, and this is just for $2.95/month

Create your Bluehost account.
Start by filling in your account details like your name, email address (it’s super important to use an up-to-date email address because this is where your login details and account information will be sent) and address.

If you don’t want to enter your information manually, you can connect your Bluehost account with your Google account. Either work!.

Select the right hosting package.
This is where you’ll choose an account plan based on the price you want to lock-in and how far in advance you’ll pay.

Note that Bluehost only offers options for you to pay 1, 2, 3 or 5 years upfront.

They don’t offer a monthly payment option (because hosting companies that do offer monthly payments charge a lot more). Even still, with whichever plan you choose, the price works out to be a great deal for starting your own blog and getting it online today.

Choosing the right package extras (skip all but one)

I highly recommend keeping the Domain Privacy Protection extra, but you can get away with skipping the rest.

Later on in this guide to start a blog, I’ll show you the many free and cheap plugins & tools you can use for things like SEO optimization, rendering most of these package extras not necessary.

As I mentioned earlier though, having the domain privacy extra keeps all of your personal contact information (your name, email, phone number and address) private.

Now, if you chose the Choice Plus Plan on the previous screen, then your Domain Privacy Protection will be listed as “Free” just like this screenshot above shows—it’s included in that plan.

If you chose a Basic or Plus Plan, then you’ll want to check the box to add Domain Privacy Protection to your order for around $1/mo.

The total you’ll now see is the amount you’re going to pay today. Remember though, you won’t have to pay again for 1, 2, 3 or 5 years depending on the package you chose.

Plus, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee in case things don’t go as planned with your blog.

Enter your billing information

Now you’ll input your billing information, check the box that you agree to Bluehost’s Terms of Service and then hit the green “Submit” button!

Woo! It’s time for a mini celebration

You’ve officially completed the first major step of how to start a blog.

With the initial signup process complete, it’s time to move into the next stage of getting your blog fully set up and optimized.

==> Click here to head over to Bluehost and register your domain if you haven’t already.

After you go to the homepage of Bluehost you will see this screen, click on ‘Get Started now.’

STEP 3: Choose A WordPress Theme – Make It Pretty Design

Now you’ll be asked to choose the initial theme design for your new site!

You can think of a theme as the template for the visual layout of your blog. If you’re not a web developer (and I’m definitely not one), having a good theme makes design and organization of your site a snap.

Another thing you’ll want to do now is to think about your blog’s design. First impressions count for a lot so you’ll want one that says something about the type of brand you’re trying to create and that helps you stand out in the crowded blogosphere.

If you’ve gone with a self-hosted WordPress site as I suggested, you’ll have literally thousands of amazing free and paid theme options at your disposal.

Plus, once you buy a theme (which is relatively inexpensive investments) like the one I use for my blog here, THEMEFOREST , you’ll own it forever and get all the benefits of excellent support and customization options that come with premium WordPress themes and this way you can start a blog in WordPress.

However, if you’re using a free blogging platform, you’re most likely going to be quite limited in the themes and design options you have.

Let’s assume at this point we’re working with a self-hosted WordPress blog (like mine). Here’s what you should be looking for in a theme and your site’s design.

The premium theme supplier that I have used over the years and highly recommend is THEMEFOREST I’ve used their themes in the early days of numerous blogs and love their design but also support.

How to pick the right theme for your blog

Picking a blog theme can be a lot of fun. But it can also take up a ton of the time that you could otherwise be used to write and promote your posts (and thus getting to your first blog income faster).

There are so many themes to check out, that it’s easy to get swept away by the ones that look awesome, but might not be functionally great.

Remember, the design isn’t just about how your blog looks. It’s about how it works. And the easier it is to navigate and read the better.

Here are a few suggestions of what to look for when checking out themes:

  • Keep it simple
  • Responsiveness is a must
  • Does it work in different browsers?
  • Supported plugins
  • SEO friendliness.
  • Support
  • Ratings and reviews.

If you want a wider selection of WordPress themes at standard prices, THEMEFOREST is the most popular WordPress theme marketplace. You’ll find just about anything you want in its selection.

STEP 4: How To Install A Theme & Get Ready For Readers

You’ll need a content management system (CMS) to build your site and manage your blog posts.

There’s only one option for this: WordPress. Use WordPress for your blog, end of the story. Because of how popular WordPress is, most web hosts offer a one-click install for WordPress. It’s super easy.

Mouse over to ‘Appearance’ from the sidebar and click on ‘Themes.’ Now click on ‘Add New’ from the top.

Hold on a second! There are two things we can do here.

1. If you have purchased a theme, we will upload it.

2. But for some reason (low budget) or you are just starting, it’s ok to start with a free one.

Later we can upgrade.

Let me show you both way.

To Install Free One:
Here once you click on ‘Add New,’ you can browse some ‘Featured’ themes available on the same page. Check out which you like the most. Mouse over to that and you will see a button of ‘Install.’

There are only a few. But you can explore to 1,000+ free designs from here. Just click on ‘Feature Filter’ and select what kind of design you are interested in.

Read Also Best Blog WordPress Themes For Bloggers

You will have amazing results. Click on ‘Apply Filters’ to see and then choose which layout is suitable for you. In my case, I like ‘eMag.’ Mouse over to layout you like and click on ‘Install.’

Next, you will see an option to ‘Activate’ in the same place where ‘Install’ was written before. ‘Activate’ theme, and you are done here installing a new free theme.

Congratulations! We have successfully installed a WordPress theme.

STEP 5: Marketing Your Blog Content & Get Traffic

Promoting your blog is where I see the majority of bloggers fail.

There are lots of great bloggers out there that no one has ever heard about, simply because they don’t know how, or just don’t want, to promote their blog.

So just how do you promote your blog?

Well, it turns out the most effective methods of promotion are free!

A. Set Up Your Email List
From the day you launch your blog, you need to be collecting email addresses from your readers so that you can remain in contact with them. To do this, you’ll need to sign up with an email marketing provider.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get started, in fact, you can get a free account with GETRESPONSE

Sooner or later, you’ll hear a stat like this:

Email marketing has 22X the ROI of any other marketing channel!

Email is still the main form of Internet communication that most people use for work. And when someone subscribes to your blog they are giving you a direct line to their daily life.

Technically, this is true. The response from email will always dominate any other channel that you try pushing a campaign to. But you have to acquire those emails in the first — they’ve already been filtered for the most receptive people.

In other words, email by its nature is more responsive, so the comparison ROI stats are kind of dumb. They’re stating the obvious.

If you want to make sure that your blog lasts for the long term you need to start a mailing list and then work hard to get more email subscribers and keeps that rate rising.

Every marketing engine I’ve built for companies has relied on emails at its core. You only need two things:

An opt-in to sign up on your sidebar

GETRESPONSE has a free account for up to 1,000 email subscribers, which will cover you’re a blog for a while.

Click Here To Get Your Getresponse – 30 Day FREE TRIAL

The main thing is that you’re collecting email subscribers from the beginning. But the main reason that you want to grow an email list is that you just can’t trust Google for traffic. And you can’t trust social networking sites that constantly change their policies.

It’s only the mailing list that gives you a constant source of traffic, should something goes wrong.

Email lists can be a gold mine once you have a few thousand subscribers, and the money really rolls in once you have 10,000 subscribers and above.

B. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will need attention
Content is the king, but promotion is the audience.

If you want to get a lot of traffic from Google you will need to stay on top of the changing SEO trends that happen every year.

The best way to “do” SEO is to make amazing stuff, promote it and let the links and shares come naturally without any form of manipulation.

Social Media – To help spread the word about new posts on your blog, you’ll want to create social media profiles with some of the various platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Each platform has its own pros and cons and which ones you choose to use will depend on your bandwidth and niche.

I suggest starting with two-three and investing time in nurturing and growing them before adding more to the mix.

STEP 6: Create Your Blog Monetization Strategy

A. Building Your Readership

There are lots of ways to monetize your blog posts once you have a good number of visitors. But when you are just starting out you won’t have many readers, so it’s important to make the most of each one.

That means that you need to make sure first-time readers of your blog will come back. Only by having returning readers will you ever build a sizable audience that you can profit from.

So how can you stay in touch with your readers?

The easiest and best way is to ask them for an email address where you can contact them with updates.

By collecting your readers’ email addresses from the very beginning of your blog you will build the biggest mailing list possible.

Ever wonder why just about every website you go to asks for you to sign up with your email address?

In marketing, there is a saying that “the money is in the mailing list”.

This is because of a mailing list allows you to contact people over and over again. You will need an email marketing service to get started. By far the easiest and most reliable that I have found is GETRESPONSE, which offers a free trial of their services for new bloggers.

Now that you’ve created your blog and customized it to your liking, you are probably wondering how I can actually make money from my blog. There are actually a lot of different ways to successfully monetize your blog.

Don’t expect to get rich overnight. However, there is no such thing as a get rich quick scheme.

There are really only two ways to monetize a serious blog.

Yup, only two.

Bloggers try a ton of different ideas, maybe about a dozen. Out of those dozen, only two work at scale.

So what are they?

Affiliates and info products.

Affiliate marketing is the second most commonly used monetization strategy among bloggers. Basically, you recommend products and services to your readers and when they make a purchase you get a referral commission.

You can turn your WordPress blog into a fully functioning e-commerce store if you want to. You can sell physical items, services, digital downloads, and even accept donations via WordPress.

Some other blog ideas:

  • Become an affiliate and make money for promoting products and services.
  • Sign up for Google AdSense, display ads on your website, and make money every time someone clicks on one.
  • Sell ad space to others in your industry so they can promote their products and services to your audience base.
  • Create a membership site and save your very best content for those willing to pay for it, how to write professional blog posts.

Here are some of the best ways to make money from your blog.

  • Google Adsense
  • Selling your own digital products
  • Newsletters
  • Coaching
  • Consulting
  • Dropshipping
  • Memberships (recurring)
  • Selling the actual website
  • Sponsored Content
  • Freelancing (Selling Your Services)
  • Podcast Sponsorships
  • Affiliate Programs
  • Physical Products (eCommerce) and Software Tools
  • Sell courses
  • Accepting donations
  • Sponsored Content

The possibilities for making money from a blog are endless.

STEP 7: Publish Great Blog Content

So you have learned how to start a blog on WordPress and by now you should have a fully working WordPress website on your very own domain name.

The heart & soul of a successful blog is great content. If no one wants to read what you are writing about then your blog won’t be very successful.

You should also have a custom blog theme that fits with your blog’s topic and have a blogging strategy and calendar.

Congrats again – you’ve done a LOT and I’m proud that you’ve managed to get so far.

Even personal bloggers should have a good idea of what they want to write about before they dive in. Don’t fret!

Content planning isn’t rocket science. We’ll walk you through it every step of the way.

Who Is Your Blog’s Target Audience?
You need to be clear about what you want to say, and it helps to imagine who your audience will be.

Pick a topic that you are truly passionate about, and think about the needs of your blog’s readers.

Choose a Niche For Your Blog
Niches are pretty important for your blog.

Some big websites, magazines, and newspapers can target huge audiences because they have massive amounts of content and a stable full of writers to create it.

However, you’re not going to get far competing with those heavyweights, so you need to drill down into your target audience and focus on a subset of your audience.

By narrowing your focus to a niche, you stand a chance of building the best blog on that topic.

Before you actually learn to do this, you need to figure out what you’re going to be writing about.

One of the key “secrets” to blogging success is choosing a niche market (basically a topic) that you have an interest in and most importantly, have the ability to compete in.

Choose a niche too small and you’ll run out of blog post ideas, make a lot less money and be limited to just that industry. Choose a niche that’s too broad and you’ll probably have a hard time competing and getting any visitors to your blog.

When you choose a niche, go for one that:

  • You are super interested in has an upwards trend,
  • Has more than one monetization opportunity,
  • You’ve already got knowledge about,
  • Has a relatively low competition,

Examples of (good) niches:

  • Deep-sea diving guide
  • Weight Loss Tips
  • Baby Swimming techniques
  • First aid online training
  • Bear hunting tips
  • Saving money for college
  • Labrador training guide

What’s Next?
We’ve got great content that can help bloggers of all experience levels. Here are some of our most popular posts.

Now that you’ve made it this far in learning how to start a blog and make money from it, it’s time to hunker down and do the real day-to-day work that professional (meaning you get paid for it) bloggers do.

Write something great for your own blog. Build a relationship with the reader.

Write something fantastic for another blog. Build a relationship with a fellow blogger.

Try a certain kind of content. Check analytics to see what people like and what they don’t like.

Write more, Build more.

Life is all about struggles, overcoming them and get up every time even when life tries to pull you down very hard.

If you follow my steps above, you’ll be ready to blog like a pro in no time and with very little financial investment.

So if you’ve ever wanted to start a blog, all I have left to say is – stop dreaming and just do it!

I started my first site way back in 2012, it wasn’t pretty, but honestly, it was the best decision I ever made.

Every week I come across more and more bloggers who have quit their 9-5 job and are making a living from blogging & affiliate marketing.

Obviously, this doesn’t happen overnight, but you have to start and take the first step.

That’s why I wrote this guide to start a website, and thankfully today it’s MUCH easier to get a site live.

You don’t need to know a thing about coding or servers – as my own grandma has proven! – Thanks to Bluehost & WordPress.

If you still haven’t created your Bluehost account, click here to take advantage of the limited discount and free domain name.

Now, I want to know how your journey learning how to start a blog is coming along too.

I hope I have explained each and everything very well. I am sure you have already created since starting a blog is affordable and to be successful, you need hard work, motivation, dedication and of course creativity.

It may take a few months, but the result will be higher than your expectations. You are speaking of the world and with humans. Be creative and share your experience and thoughts with the world.

A very tiny request: If you liked this post, please share this?

I know most people don’t share because they feel that us bloggers don’t need their “tiny” social share. But here’s the truth…

I built this blog piece by piece, one small share at a time, and will continue to do so.

So thank you so much for your support, my reader.

A share from you would seriously help a lot with the growth of this blog.

Some great suggestions:
– Pin it! (I even made a pretty pin for ya!)
– Share it to your favourite blog + biz Facebook group
– Tweet it!
– Stumble it!
It won’t take more than 10 seconds of your time. The share buttons are right here. 🙂
